What is the History of Anson?

Anson is the seat of Jones County and is situated at the intersection of U.S. Highways 83/277 and I-80. The town was first found at Fort Phantom Hill closer to Abilene but relocated with the anticipation of the Texas and Pacific Railway coming through the area. The railroad never made its way to Anson but continued to grow and establish a courthouse. Today, Anson is known for the three-night “Texas Cowboys’ Christmas Ball” held on the weekend before Christmas. The event was first held in 1885 and happened infrequently until it stopped during the Prohibition before being revived in 1940. Anson is rumored to be the inspiration for the movie Footloose for its no dancing law on the books that was only lifted for the annual Christmas ball. The ordinance was later changed to allow supervised dancing.
